Restoration of population

Restoration of natural houbara bustard populations

To ensure the restoration of natural houbara bustard populations, the ECWP has set up a reinforcement strategy that involves releasing captive-bred birds on a regular basis. Gradual releases have been made in an experimental framework in order to learn main environmental parameters that might affect the reinforcements’ success. It is crucial to painstakingly track the released individuals and study their ethology, ecology and demography. Meanwhile, the knowledge acquired about wild birds, and the quality and availability of habitats in hunting and non-hunting areas, have enabled a continuous adjustment of the reinforcement strategy.
